Build #2: Mosin Nagant Sniper Rifle

This build is set up for casual bench rest shooting as well as seated or prone deer & feral hog hunting. If you are looking for the Mosin brush gun for shots 200 yards or less and from a tree stand, then check out Build #1.

Why build a Mosin Sniper rifle?

A few reasons:

  • Sounded like fun (seriously… the best reason)
  • There are some cool Mosin upgrade products on the market that Mosin owners have questions about

54r_178gr_A-Max_bullet_drop_chartFor this Mosin Sniper build we were looking to:

  • Stretch the range out to 500-600 yard range… but then consulted the ballistics charts and see that likely isn’t going to happen within the range of adjustment of our optics due to the significant bullet drop we expect from the 7.62x54r round, even with a high BC custom load of 178 grain Hornady A-Max bullets.
  • Tune the action to run more smoothly and reliably
  • Add a detachable magazine
  • Improve shooting ergonomics and adjustability
  • Reduce felt recoil
  • Improve trigger feel
  • Add a modern manual safety switch
  • Improve handling and balance

We started with the ATN X-Sight Riflescope 5-18x Smart HD Optics DGWSXS518A for initial testing.
We later shortened the barrel to about 21″ to make it easier to maneuver and better balanced. Although, if pursuing feral hogs on foot I’ll likely use the WMD Guns WMD-10, AR-10.

The sacrificial Mosin

The donor Mosin Nagant is just a run of the mill 1932 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30 that was refurbished by Molot Oruzhie Ltd. and purchased at wholesale cost of $99 from a distributor. While this Hex receiver Mosin Nagant is not one of the most bland and uninteresting models available… the Molot labeling on the side of the receiver and very aggressive refurb process depresses the collector value, IMHO. Yes, I am a licensed collector and care about collector value. My personal collection has a variety of Mosins that will NOT be modified.

The Plan:

Start with a donor Mosin Nagant rifle, a 1932 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30 refurbished by Molot Oruzhie Ltd. and sporting billboard-like Molot branding and import marks, but otherwise original condition.

How did the Mosin Nagant Rifle perform before upgrades?

Very poorly. .
For a 87+ year old military surplus rifle with a completely unknown history before being refurbished by Molot, I suppose it wasn’t that bad. By modern standards it wasn’t very good. At 85 yards our tightest group was about 4.5 inches and the old 1932 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30 only managed to put 1 of 3 shots on our EZ2C bullseye target shooting new Prvi Partisan PPU 182 gr ammo. The picture shows the target which has a one inch grid pattern. Shooting was done from the Hyskore Dual Damper shooting rest, which should have helped remove human error and tighten up the groups.  However, the table supporting the rest wasn’t as rock solid stable as we would have liked.
