Terrapin Outfitters Hatchling Hammock Chair Review

Terrapin Outfitters of South Carolina has a hammock chair that they call the Hatchling.

1st Impressions of the Terrapin Outfitters Hatchling Hammock Chair

At first I thought that this was just another short hammock. I openly wondered what purpose would it ever serve in my equipment load out?

Terrapin Outfitters is the definition of a cottage vendor in the hammocking community. Hatchling hammock chairs are hand made in custom colors, lengths, and fabrics. I’ve seen single layers, double layers, even tie dyed ones. The construction is top notch. You can tell that love and care is put into each and every one. My first TO Hatchling was won in an online raffle. So, I thought I’d give it a good try. After sitting in it for 10 minutes I realized I didn’t want to get out.

Terrapin Outfitters Hatchling Hammock Chair Specs

  • Single layer without cinch buckles is under 4oz.
  • 8 oz. with buckles and straps.
  • My heaviest double layer weighs in at 17oz.

Where to get hammock chairs

Obviously, you can order direct from TO. You can also find various types of chairs at CampSaver or REI, or make your own with a DIY supplies from RBTR.

Terrapin Outfitters Hatchling Hammock Chair Field Test Results

I’ve had my Terrapin Outfitters Hatchlings for over 6months now. They go everywhere with me. Car camping, backpacking, to the office… there’s always one not too far from me. I’ve used a Hatchling as a chair, a gear hammock, even a pack cover.

This fine piece of gear is not without its shortfalls. To use the Hatchling Hammock Chair you meed two trees, or some sort of attachment points.  It suffers from the same warmth problems that all hammocks do. In colder weather the Hatchling Hammock Chair needs an underquilt. There never seem to be enough trees close to the campfire. So, unless your friends have hammock chairs, you sit alone. But being able to get off your feet at the end of a long hike makes it all worth it. Needing the attachment points allows you to get creative. I have used trees, truck beds, ATV frames, even car tires to secure the Hatchling and get comfortable.

Overall

I am a huge fan of the Hatchling Hammock Chair design and have purchased a couple since that first raffle . Terrapin Outfitters Hatchlings have gotten more comfortable as they been refined. A friend who loves to hike but has a bad back says it relieves all of his back pain at the end of a hike. The ability to customize your personal Hatchling from lengths to color and fabrics gives you a way to add their own flair. Heck, I even know a guy that bowhunts from his Hatchling.

*Editor’s note: Chris wanted to give the Terrapin Outfitters Hatchling a perfect 5.0 score. We have NEVER given any product a perfect 5.0 Gears rating. While I trust that Chris REALLY likes the Hatchling, I’ve yet to see a perfect product and made the editorial decision to change his perfect score rating to a 4.5.
