The problem – Bulky headsets!

When our review calendar is heavy on pistols it really isn’t that big of a deal to toss on a set of SportEar M-4 electronic ear muffs or  Howard Leight Impact Sport headset. They amplify ambient sounds a bit, while cutting out or compressing sound at a damaging level.
However, things change when we have more rifles in the review schedule as I find myself perpetually annoyed as I try to find the right position to get a good cheek weld while shooting the rifle… without knocking off the headset as it bumps or rubs against the rifle stock. Simply put, it isn’t possible sometimes and I end up resorting to some sort of passive in-the-ear plugs. I detest most passive in-the-ear plugs because they block out all noises, even the sounds I want to hear, like range commands or the animals I am hunting. I’ve had a bit of luck with the SportEAR XP3 Sport Plugz, in that they allow some ambient sounds in when the ports are opened. However, the budget, passive, in-the-ear SportEAR XP3 Sport Plugz definitely don’t add any sort of amplification.

Possible solution – SportEar Ghost Stryke electronic ear plugs
