Ruger SR1911 .45 Auto Pistol – Hogue 1911 Wrap Around Grip Installation and Review
If the AR-15 is the “erector set” of the rifle world, then the 1911 may hold that title among pistols. 1911 pistol owners have a dizzying array of options to customize their pistols for form and/or function. One of the easiest, most cost effective, and useful upgrades to any 1911 pistol is a quick 1911 grip upgrade. For collectors of classic 1911 pistols upgrading to Hogue 1911 rubber grips (Amazon link) does not permanently modify the pistol and allows the original grips to be stored so they aren’t damaged.
I have an affinity for grippy rubber pistol grips with front finger groves and modest palm swells. The tried and true Hogue slip-on grip held a place of honor on our old First Generation Glock 17 for nearly 2 decades. When that pistol was retired to a collector, the Hogue slip-on grip was moved to a Gen 4 Glock 17 and still looks new.
When a Ruger SR1911 Centerfire Pistol (model 6700) found it’s way to our lab for testing, we quickly ordered the Hogue Rubber Grip Govt. Model Rubber Grip with Finger Grooves, model 45000. Truth be told, we are sufficiently confident that the Hogue Monogrip will suit our needs better than the stock Ruger rosewood 1911 grip panels, that we didn’t even test fire the Ruger with original grips. In fairness, the rosewood grips that came on the SR1911 from the factory are very nicely done and look great.
Why change the grips on this brand new Ruger SR1911?
We were looking for 5 improvements over the stock wooden pistol grip panels:
- Better recoil absorption
- Magazine release thumb indention for easier activation of the mag release
- A softer grip for more comfortable IWB carry
- Finger grooves on the front strap for better control
- Rubber grip panels for better purchase and stability
*April 2016 Update: The Hogue 1911 rubber grips have met those 5 criteria with flying colors. The only gripe is that the panels are straight on the sides and do not have any sort of palm swell. After upgrading to the Hogue 1911 rubber grips this Ruger SR1911 is the most accurate pistol in my hands of any I have shot… especially after upgrading to the Storm Lake drop in threaded barrel and GunPro 1911 sights.
We may also try out Pachmayr 1911 grips (Amazon link), and have reviewed the Recover Tactical Grip and Rail system (Amazon link). However, we like the Hogue 1911 rubber grips well enough that there isn’t a lot of motivation to try anything else.
Installation of the Hogue Monogrip model 45000 rubber grip for the 1911 “Colt Government Commander, Gold Cup & Duplicate Frames” is incredibly quick, easy, and simple. Installing new Hogue 1911 rubber grips on a 1911 pistol is a DIY job that requires only a few minutes and the appropriate tool to remove the 2 grip screws on each side of the pistol.
