Quick thoughts on the new WGI game cameras

I have used Wildgame Innovations trail cameras for the past several seasons, mainly because the local big box sporting goods store had good sales on them every year. The WGI game cameras have proven to be the “best bang for your buck” I could find. However, I have only used their more basic, budget oriented models. This year Wildgame Innovations sent three of their new digital trail camera models for review. So far, all of the new trail cameras have performed flawlessly. I really like the textured tree bark camo that adorns all three and love that they all run on AA batteries, since I have a plethora of AA rechargables. All of these digital trail cameras are smaller than any that I have used before.

Best of the bunch – Crush X 20 Lightsout

Digital Game Camera Review - New Trail Cameras for Deer Hunting Season from Wildgame Innovations - Crush X 20 openOf the three trail cameras my favorite is the new Crush™ X 20 Lightsout™ trail camera. The Crush X 20 has a built in color TFT screen for reviewing images and videos without removing the memory card from the trail camera. This may not sound like a big deal, but it certainly can be. Two deer seasons ago one of our hunters checked a trail camera and found only a few images of tree branches blowing in the wind on the memory card. While reinstalling the microSD card in the SD adapter to put it back in the trail camera the tiny little memory card slipped from a gloved hand and fell into the tall grass below the camera, never to be seen again. Had he been able to easily look at the images without removing the memory card, then he would could have deleted the useless tree images and not even removed the memory card. I also really like the vertical orientation and included microUSB port on the Crush X20 (the other two cameras have the old miniUSB port for pulling pictures without removing the SD card).

Size matters! – NANO 22 Lightsout trail camera

The smallest of the bunch is the NANO 22 Lightsout trail camera. The nano also uses only four AA batteries, while the Crush X 20 and Crush X 10 both use eight AA batteries each. Although, we have a Nano series power pack on the way, which will hold four mmore AA batteries. Adding the battery pack will make the Nano a bit deeper than the Crush X 10, but gives the flexibility to use the Nano in either configuration.

Full features on a budget – Crush 10 Illusion trail camera

At a list price of $99.99, the Crush 10 Illusion trail camera is the only sub-$100 trail camera of this group. To control costs there are fewer IR LEDs, the LEDs are visible behind a clear cover (as opposed to hidden behind a dark cover on the Crush X 20 and Nano 22 models), the digital camera has lower resolution at 10 MP and it comes with small bungees instead of a tree strap. For most folks, these are likely to be very acceptable compromises that will not reduce utility.

In the field

Digital Game Camera Review - New Trail Cameras for Deer Hunting Season from Wildgame Innovations - all 3 on tree openInitial testing was done around the Gear Report HQ in order to verify functionality before deploying the digital trail cameras at our hunting sites. All were tested in video and still image capture modes and all performed as advertised. The only oddity noted is that the temperature reported by the Nano 22 appeared accurate when the trail camera was in the shade, but was 5-12 degrees high when the camera was in full sun.

Check back for updates as we use these digital trail cameras on our hunting tracts.

Overall

Each of these Wildgame Innovations digital trail cameras fits a niche.

  • The full featured Crush X 20 for the hunter willing to invest a bit more for high resolution images and videos, backlit buttons, a color TFT screen and blacked-out IR flash.
  • The compact Nano 22 for places where a smaller camera with high res images and videos and the option to run small with 4 batteries or a bit larger with 8 batteries.
  • The lower cost Crush 10 Illusion that blends in well and offers a strong set of features, although with lower resolution images.

We will update this review as the season progresses and we have more experience in the field with these digital game cameras. Thus far we are impressed an expect good things from them all.
