Updated December 2015

Since receiving the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench in February, 2015 it has become the one of very few items that goes to the range with us EVERY time. We rarely shoot at “improved” shooting ranges with permanent benches. Even when we have a permanent bench, we set up the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench beside it for the spotter, since the spotting scope mounts to the bench. It also makes a great portable table to keep shooting gear like ammo, guns, ear and eye protection off of the ground. Seriously… the first thing that goes in the van when we are headed to the range is the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench. I honestly didn’t expect to find it all that useful, but now I can’t imagine shooting without it.

Quick Q&A:

How does it compare to other portable shooting benches? This is the first purpose designed portable shooting bench that we have used.
Is it a good value? If you have a good shooting location but a permanent bench is not available, then the stability, adaptability, portability and adjustability of the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench for might be for you.
Should I buy the Ten Ring shooting bench? If a permanent shooting bench won’t work at your location and would like a dependable solid platform to help ensure shot accuracy, then yes.
Suitable for hunting? Yes, if having a longer shooting format like hunting rabbits, squirrels, prairie dogs, or maybe coyotes from a stationary ground location, then the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench might be your ticket to bagging hides or eradicating varmints.
Can the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench be upgraded?
Yep! The Hyskore Track and Elevate shooting rest can be mounted to give you the ultimate field rest that is under 30 lbs. See the review here.

Assembly
The Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench has adequate instructions with pictures that make the assembly painless. The surfaces, finishes and fit of parts did not give us any problem or disappointment.

Setup:

  1. Remove the M10 bolt from each leg, fold the leg down into position, reinsert the bolt in the appropriate hole (2 holes allow you to raise or lower the height of the bench or account for uneven terrain)
  2. Screw V-notch rifle support into the appropriate threaded hole along the centerline of the front portion of the table top (4 holes to choose from for different sized rifles)
  3. Screw the spotting scope support post into one of the side accessory threaded holes, if desired.

Field testing

The Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench was taken to our testing ground where we took several hundred shots from it to targets at different distances. Even when the target location was changed from 40 yards straight ahead to 100 yards and about 20 degrees to the left, the pivoting ability of the Hyskore Track and Elevate shooting rest on top of the Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench permitted us to align to the new target without having to reposition the whole platform. During testing we found the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench to be very stable.

By itself, we really like the Ten Ring shooting bench. We really feel that the sum of the bench and the Hyskore Track and Elevate shooting rest is better than the sum of both parts. However, we found it a bit frustrating that the expanded metal top surface of the Ten Ring Bench did not allow the rear pivot wheels on the Track and Elevate shooting rest to roll smoothly. We recommend that Hyskore add a flat metal section to the rear section of the bench top in order to allow the Track and Elevate shooting rest wheels to roll smoothly as it pivots. As it is, hunting might be challenging since the bumpy top makes noise and doesn’t allow the Track & Elevate rest to pivot smoothly. This small change to the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench would take it from a really good product to a great product.

Versatility
The Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench has 4 front post locations for the padded V-notch rifle support, allowing for several rifle length configurations. The top of the bench provides support for a wide range of supports for the rear of the rifle, like sand bags, squeeze bags, or even full shooting rests. All shooting rests won’t fit or work on the Hyskore Shooting Bench, but we expect that some will work just fine.

We like that the legs of the Hyskore Ten Ring Portable Shooting Bench have position options to adjust the height of the top of the bench and accommodate uneven terrain. However, we would like to see at least one more position option and possibly the ability to adjust the length of one or more of the legs. We think this would allow leveling of the bench in rougher terrain and allow the portable shooting bench to be used in a wider range of locations.

Pros

  • Accommodates left and right handed shooters. This is a big deal for Josejuan, our left handed shooter.
  • Portable enough to take to the field. 20 lbs alone and less than 30 with the track and elevate.
  • Folds flat for easy transport.
  • Sturdy triangulated base and platform with V-notch rifle support options to accommodate different rifle lengths.
  • Allows for the Hyskore Track and Elevate Shooting Rest to be mounted for added shooting adjustability and control.

Rigid V-notch rifle support

Cons

  • The legs on our model only have 2 height adjustment choices. There are pictures on the instructions that have a 3rd option which could be useful on uneven terrain.
  • It would be nice if the V-notch were able to pivot on the top of the threaded post, so that side to side movement of the rifle would not cause the height adjustment screw to move. Of course, this is a moot point if shooting at a fixed target or with the Track and Elevate shooting rest attached.
  • When the Track and Elevate shooting rest is attached, the tracking wheels do not have a smooth surface to glide on. The mesh top makes the tracking bumpy. Adding a smooth, flat surface to the aft portion of the bench top for the wheels to roll on would take this bench to the next level.
  • I would love to see a spring-loaded pin used to lock the legs in place instead of screws. The screws look cool and are seriously heavy duty, but take long enough to unscrew, fold the leg, then re-screw that it gets annoying. No annoying enough to stop using the bench, but still would be nice to have a quicker method of deploying the legs.

Even with the issues we have noted, the Hyskore portable bench is very useful and will provide solid support and stability with some adjustability that can make your field shooting or hunting experience a success. We recommend this product.
