Left in the dark ages…

Advances in automotive technology have benefitted civilian vehicles far more than the US Military workhorse, the HMMWV. For several years the military has had the option to install vastly improved headlights powered by efficient and durable LEDs. However, the brands that supply LED headlights to the government aren’t all that keen on selling to civilians. While surplus and grey market 24V HMMWV headlights are often available, they usually cost over $100 per headlight. Sometimes MUCH more. This is a shame since the old school incandescent headlights in most surplus HMMWVs are prone to failure under the abuse dished out by the rough riding and unrefined Humvee.

Easy upgrade

We found and tested inexpensive LED headlights for Humvee that work great, are less than $100 shipped, and are a relatively easy DIY upgrade. Converting your Humvee to LED headlights should rank high on any HMMWV owner’s list. Bookmark this review and check back periodically for updates on how these HMMWV LED Headlights hold up. At ten months of use they are operating perfectly. Here are two options:

  1.  I bought 2 sets. 1 for Jeep TJ . 1 for Humvee. Easy to install, free shipping, Hi- lo beam. I am very happy. -Terryl M.”
  2. I know several HMMWV owners that prefer the look of these lights and have had great luck with them.

How to install HMMWV LED headlights

For most HMMWVs the process is really simple. However, I have heard reports of two issues that some HMMWV owners have encountered and will detail them below.

In the pics below you see that I installed the HMMWV LED Headlights with bullet connectors on the wiring harness adapter. I did that since I wasn’t sure if the lights would work and didn’t want to cut the main wires in case I needed to send the lights back.
Now that I know the LED headlights work fine in the HMMWV I recommend putting the new connectors directly on the wires coming out of the lights and not even using the blue adapters.

Installation issues

As noted above, I have heard reports of two issues some Humvee owners have had installing LED headlights.

  • Some models of the metal ring that supports the headlight have a raised lip that interferes with the cooling fins on the back of the headlight in a couple of places, preventing full seating of the light in the housing. The easy fix is to remove the raised lip, bend it out of the way, dremel away material, etc. The black housings in the following pics have the raised lip and are black because the owner painted them. They did not come that way.
  • The other issue is that the spring between 4 and 5 o’clock on the metal housing can stick up a bit too much, causing interference and not allowing the headlight to fully seat. Simply remove the spring, drill or dremel the edge of the spring hole a tiny bit to allow the spring to seat below the rim of the ring, and reattach the spring.

Be careful what you buy

I ordered the first set of LED HMMWV “headlights” from eBay and was thrilled when they arrived and looked great.
However, my enthusiasm soon faded as I realized that the seller listed them as “headlights”, but they were actually the bulbs removed from surplus spot and flood light kits for MRAPs and other large military trucks. They were single beam lights, meaning they were either on or off, but not capable the normal low-beam/high-beam settings one expects on real headlights. I guess this explains why I was able to get such a good deal at only $100 per headlight. I am still trying to get the seller to take them back since flood lights throw light equally in all directions, which is dangerous since it blinds oncoming drivers. The Truck Lite 07392 lights I was sold were never intended to be used as headlights at all.
