The Deep Water Fording Kit (PN 5705693, NSN 2990-01-319-5435) for Humvees is installed to protect components from water intrusion and subsequent damage. Stock HMMWVs without the Deep Water Fording Kit can generally safely traverse water up to 30 inches deep with a hard bottom. For water up to 60 inches deep (that is FIVE feet!) the Fording kit is required.

How does the Deep Water Fording Kit work in a Humvee?

It uses crankcase pressure via the Crankcase Depression Regulator (CDRValve to create positive pressure to all “wet” components to keep water from entering the components through seals.

The “DEEP FORD” switch actuates the cam on the right side of the pump to pressurize the system. A Fording CDR is required for the HMMWV deep water fording kit to work properly. Leaving your HMMWV’s switch on “DEEP FORD” for long periods will result in blown seals.

The switch also turns off the fan, right?

NO! Not at all. Regardless of whether the Deep Water Fording Kit is installed or not, the fan cutoff switch (Time Delay Module) lets the fan free spin for two reasons:

  1. Primarily to reduce engine load to allow more horsepower for passing
  2. Secondarily, more HP and fan disengagement for water entry (So, fan blades don’t break on contact with water)

The Project Humvee Battlewagon

Gear Report acquired a real HMMWV (High Mobility Multi Wheeled Vehicle) from the US Army for use as our official field and shooting range vehicle. We have already posted about some of our upgrade projects (Project Humvee Battlewagon article links) and have a lot of really cool projects on the way. The Deuce Utility Vehicle (D.U.V.) Project M35A2

The D.U.V. project started with a fairly standard 1968 M35a2 two and a half ton 6×6 cargo truck. Commonly known as the “Deuce-and-a-half” or “The Deuce.” We aren’t yet sure where it will stop.
