Humvee DIY – How To Adjust HMMWV Doors

So, your HMMWV hard doors don’t close right, huh?

After installing surplus x-doors and x-door strikers on the Project Humvee Battlewagon I quickly realized that the doors were hard to close. It was nearly impossible to get the door latch to engage the 2nd click, and if you could, then getting the door unlatched was difficult. On one of the doors it was so hard to open that I usually had to walk to the other side of the vehicle and open the door for the passenger.

Safety issue

Obviously, doors that can’t be opened from the inside are not acceptable. If there is a problem and the passengers need to get out in a hurry, like a fire in the vehicle, then all doors MUST be easy to open.

Problem solved

I did a bit of research and discovered that the hard doors were never intended to be mounted on soft top HMMWVs. Go figure. However, there is a pretty quick and easy solution… add a spacer behind each door latch. Once the spacers are installed the door hinges and striker may also need adjusted. See the video below for the skinny on how to fix your x-doors. Parts and tools required are listed below the video.

Washers?

Cameron M left the following note: “I ended up just stacking two 1/4″ ID washers as spacers on each bolt as that was easier. The total thickness of two washers was about 1/8″. Works great!” and sent these pics.
